I didn't find anything called a 'range switch' but clicking around on all the diagrams, I did find a 'position switch' which is likely what you're speaking about, which seems to be mounted outside on the transmission (just where it would be getting wet in puddles!). There are two automatics, AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION A5S325Z, and AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION A5S360R / A5S390R, but the second didn't come up with anything so I think I may have the first one. I'm in Realoem looking for this 'transmission range switch' where I'm in the automatic transmission section where I have two choices, one of which is ]gearshift automatic' and the other is 'gearshift steptronic' where I'm not sure which I have although I don't see the range switch pictured there anyway. I would be very happy if it's the range switch, especially since it happened suddenly in the rain after I was splashing about in the puddles. All I am doing is hoping it's not the transmission, and that it's something else.

I don't remember seeing any alternator light on the dash, so, I'm guessing at the moment: I put it on a charger, which took 6 amps at first, and now, after about 15 minutes, is about at 3 to 4 amps. I checked the battery, which isn't new (maybe 3 to 5 years? - I didn't remove it to see the sticker) where today is a relatively cold day, where the voltage on a DMM was 12.0 which is a bit lower than the 13.8 expected. The right outside mirror moved when I went into reverse, but the car was in neutral no matter what gear I put the automatic in. This morning, it started just fine, but would not shift into gear. Yesterday, in the rain, I got a Trans Failsafe Prog on my dash where the car was driving as if it was in too high a gear, especially at starts.
